An Extraordinary J-1 Teacher Advancing Mathematics Education from the Philippines to California
By Catherine Golden/Project Touchdown
Through the J-1 Teacher Exchange Program, her professional journey from the Philippines to California evolved into a sustained record of distinguished achievement, instructional leadership, and scholarly contribution in the field of mathematics education. Since 2021, she have served as a Mathematics Teacher (Integrated Math II – Accelerated and Pre-Calculus) at Lighthouse Community Public Schools in Oakland, California, contributing specialized expertise within a high-performing, diverse academic environment.
She hold professional teaching eligibility and certification in both the United States and the Philippines, including a U.S. Single Subject Credential in Mathematics (Clear Credential), a Hawaii Teacher Standards Board License, and the rank of Master Teacher II in the Philippines—a designation awarded to educators demonstrating advanced instructional competence and leadership. These credentials reflect national and international recognition of her professional standing and have enabled her to assume roles of trust and responsibility within U.S. schools.
Maredy’s work extends beyond classroom instruction into instructional leadership, mentoring, and research-informed practice. She teach accelerated secondary mathematics, designing and implementing lessons that emphasize conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, and academic discourse. In recognition of her expertise, she serve as an Alder Mentor, providing structured coaching, observation feedback, and professional guidance to a resident teacher—contributing directly to the development of other educators and the overall instructional capacity of the school.
A defining feature of her professional profile is her original scholarly contribution to education research. She is the author of multiple published studies, including Effectiveness of Worktext in Teaching Grade 7 Mathematics, Video Lessons and Worksheets as Remediation Tools for Basic Mathematical Skills, and Enhanced Rewriting Activities to Increase the Scores of Grade 10 Learners in Right Trigonometry. These works demonstrate original contributions of major significance by translating research into practical, scalable classroom interventions that improve student outcomes. Maredy’s interdisciplinary research on The Potential of Ampalaya Seeds (Momordica charantia) as an Alternative Source of Brewed Medicinal Tea further reflects scholarly breadth and research rigor.
Upon her arrival in California, she encountered a professional culture centered on excellence, accountability, and data-driven decision-making. She actively contribute to this environment by implementing formative and summative assessment systems to support diverse learners, including students with IEPs and multilingual students—demonstrating measurable instructional impact across varied student populations.
Throughout her five-year J-1 appointment (2021–present), she have maintained a record of sustained professional achievement, adapting to a new educational system while continuing to advance as an instructional leader, mentor, and scholar. The challenges of international transition strengthened my resilience and further distinguished my ability to perform at a high level in complex and demanding educational settings.
As her J-1 program concludes in 2026, this experience affirms my long-term trajectory toward continued national and international impact in mathematics education, instructional leadership, and scholarly innovation. She is deeply grateful to Alliance Abroad Group, my school leadership, colleagues, and students for the opportunity to contribute at this level. This journey reinforces my commitment to advancing educational excellence and to serving as a leader whose work bridges research, practice, and global educational communities.
